Among the titles on display, you will find Watchmen by Alan Moore, Dave Gibbons, & John Higgins, Barefoot Gen v. 3 by Keiji Nakazawa, and The Beats: A Graphic History with text by Harvey Pekar et al., art by Ed Piskor et al.

The CCC Library is pleased to salute the 2011 retirees from the college with a display of books that they have identified as infuentional in their lives and careers.

Titles range from popular classics such as Goodbye Mr. Chips by James Hilton and Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson to those of a more technical nature, for example, The Nature of Chemical Bond and Structure of Molecular Crystals by Linus Pauling.

Books That Changed Our Lives - selected by members of the Dead Poets Society

Members of the Dead Poets Society, a club recognized by Camden County College’s Student Activities Office, met recently to tell each other about books that changed their lives. Wolverton Library is pleased to present a display of those books, with their comments on why each title was chosen.

Fledgling, Seed to Harvest and Lilith’s Brood by Octavia E. Butler

 Selected by Marissa Allen:

    “Octavia’s novels changed my view of both the creators and creations that formulate science fiction and fantasy. Furthermore, her unique perspective on diversity as a biological imperative rather than mere novelty continues to influence my own writing and life.”

 

Destiny Byrd:

    “My favorite author is D.J. MacHale and he wrote Pendragon: The Merchant of Death. He was influential to me because that was the first time I was ever really engrossed in a book. I blame him for the love of reading I have today. He created a world that I could escape to, and I had never experienced that with any other book.”

 

Andrea Quinn:

    “Le Petit Prince [The Little Prince] by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry taught me that children's lit can be as rich and complex as any other genre, that nothing is insignificant if it matters to you, and that getting old and growing up are not the same thing.”

    “It's about a utopian society and they're assigned jobs rather than having to search for them. There's always one Giver who has all the knowledge of the past. Nobody else really knows about war or can see color. Everything is black and white except for the Giver. It's a great book.”

 

Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg

    “I am a huge believer in the idea that life is about figuring out who you are inside. It is a journey that every individual must set out and travel upon alone. In Stone Butch Blues, the main character Jesse lives through many traumatic experiences and in the end discovers the most important thing about life. Also, though the story is told through Jesse's eyes, the underlying tone is that some things in the world also need to be changed, not just ourselves. It is written best by Leslie Feinberg, "I don't know what it would take to really change the world.  But couldn't we get together and try to figure it out? Couldn't we be bigger?"

The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo

    “It was by far the most heart breaking story I've ever read in my life. It was very moving and throughout the book there's this repeating theme of the need to be very thankful for everyone who loves you and to not judge people on the surface...no matter how big their hump is.”

 

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll

    “Carroll is able to create the world of Wonderland from the perspective of a young child, and it shows in the words that he uses. He takes the mundane parts of Alice 's life and shows them through her eyes while at the same time telling a great story. I love his language and ability to paint such a vivid picture of the inhabitants of Wonderland. Carroll was an inspiration to me in making me break out of the shell of reality in my own writing and not be afraid to sometimes dive into another world.”

 

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte

    “Jane Eyre is the character that I can most relate to. In life,  I strive to obtain the level of humility and morality that Jane Eyre exhibits. As a child, Jane Eyre is strong willed and outspoken, but the reader watches her grow from an impetuous child into an even tempered and wise young woman. For me, the book shattered a lot of illusions that I had about the necessity to always speak one's mind and it showed the value in being humble and thoughtful. It showed me that it's not always wise to follow one's heart blindly. Sometimes keeping your self respect will trump the desire to listen to your heart. Jane Eyre broke my brain and reconstructed it in this way that I like better.”

 

 The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

    “It gives glimpses into NY Society at the turn of the century - describes the remarkable beauty of the era - the focus on the arts - and at the same time, pointedly critiques a New York high-society that is exclusive. This beautifully written novel further reminds the reader how important it is for one to leap beyond the restraints of society and live a life that is fulfilled not just full.”

  

John Barra:  

    “A series of books that changed my life are DRAGONLANCE Chronicles and Legends, a pair of fantasy trilogies by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. The characters are nearly as real to me as anyone i know, each representing a different face of humanity. In my minds eye, i can see them, their quirks, virtues, flaws and insecurities and vanities. The hard moral choices they must make, each according to his beliefs, do not always lead to positive results, not unlike the ethical complexities of real life.”

 

Kevin O'Finnigan:  

    “I’ve read nearly every book Kurt Vonnegut has published and his body of work has probably altered my life in ways I can’t even fathom. But this isn’t about authors. So if I have to select a specific work; it would be Slaughterhouse-Five.  It wasn’t the first time I encountered Mr. Vonnegut, that was Timequake, but it hit me harder than any of his other books. Billy Pilgrim’s experiences are frequently comical and melancholy at the same time. The dark and humorous ways Vonnegut describes the utter pointlessness of wars and the far reaching effects they have on the soldiers that fight in them is a message that holds true no matter the time… or the war.”

 

Persepolis - Talk About the Book, See the Movie, Enter the Contest

Persepolis, the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi that is the One-Book-Philadelphia selection for 2010, has attracted readers and graphic artists since its publication in 2003. Camden County College invites you to join the conversation - read the book, talk about it, see the movie, view the display, enter the contest. (See the Library Facebook page for information on how to enter the "Tell Your Story" contest!)

Did reading Persepolis change your views about Iran? Did you identify with the character, her situation? Does it matter that a woman is telling the story? Why does it work as a comic book? How are stories important in our lives?

Wolverton Library, Blackwood Campus will sponsor programs, and a display of work by graphic arts students. Copies of the book are available to check out.

 The display of work by graphic arts students will be on view through March. In it, the students explain how they developed their story lines and their characters. They are students of Prof. Klotzbach, Coordinator of Visual Arts, and Prof. Morrison, Computer Graphics Department.

 The Camden Campus will sponsor another chance to discuss the book on Wednesday, March 10, 3:30 p.m. in CTC Room 200.

We suggested activating 'My Reading History' as a way to keep track of the books you've read by favorite authors awhile back. Now that your reading history has grown, you may wish to sort the list by title, author, or date-checked-out.

Your wish is our command! As of last week, 'My Reading History' may be sorted by any column in it. To sort a column, place your mouse in the column heading and click.

Sharing a Book Just Got Easier!

CamCat users will notice a "Share" button at the top of item records in CamCat, the library catalog! Now it's easy to tell a friend about books from the library that you liked, or give a tip about one that helped you with an assignment.

Along with tags and lists of 'Similar Books' that make finding a book easier (see earlier blog post), this feature brings CamCat closer for social networkers who enjoy reading and sharing their joy with others!

Antique Magazines for Sale

Camden County College offers 5 lots of antique bound magazines to the highest bidder at the College's annual surplus sale! Prospective bidders may inspect the goods today, May 1, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. and obtain a Form of Bid. Sealed bids must be submitted to the Purchasing Office by tomorrow, May 2 at 10 a.m. After the bid opening, successful bidders must take the goods by noon.

The lots consist of:

The content of these magazines reflect American life and events at the time of their publication. Articles and letters to the editor concern the U.S. position before and during WW I, women's suffrage and other contemporary issues. Fiction and poetry by writers who later become very well-known, such as Mark Twain and Walt Whitman, often appeared first in these magazines. They also contain numerous engraved illustrations.

If you know someone interested in these magazines, please let them know about the sale.

Students Are Reading...

  Once again, Professor Hoheisel has shared the list of books recommended by students entering the Honors Program. Almost all are available to Camden County College borrowers - about half at the College library and half at the Camden County (Public) Library System. We are looking at filling in the remaining gaps by adding titles to the rental Leisure Reading Collection, if not with the exact title, then with something similar. Just yesterday, a title by Sister Souljah arrived and will soon be available. Now is the time to start making your summer reading list!
